Zarafina Love Jul 22, 2010 My husband and I have had our Zarafina for almost a year now, and love it! We use it twice daily. I have recommended it to many loose leaf tea drinkers because of its early morning convenience (especially if you get it all prepared the night before).
My one complaint is that it can be difficult to clean, but to be honest, I would probably hate cleaning any tea maker.
Overall... Love it!

GREAT tea, but BPA concerns? May 14, 2010 I'm rating this review primarily on performance, but I took off one star because I have concerns about the material the hot water reservoir is made out of. More on that later.
First off, I was skeptical that this would make tea any better than I had been for the last five years - boiling water in a tea kettle and steeping a tea bag. This tea is amazing. The biggest thing I notice about this is the smoothness of the tea. It has a very evenly distributed flavor; the whole cup is smooth and rich tea, not stronger on the bottom of the glass.
That said, my favorite part of this set is the cups. They are the right size for a nice cup of tea or coffee, and are always the first dirty cups in our house because we use them so often.
As much as I like the tea that this makes, I will not be using it. Without going into too much of a debate about BPA and our food containers leeching chemicals into our food, the plastic (polycarbonate?) water tank may contain BPA. Even after a call to Zarafina customer service (they could not tell me if it contained BPA, which usually means that it does), and an exhausting internet search, I am nowhere closer to finding out if there is BPA in this water tank. A few forums have asked the same question, but Zarafina seems to offer no answer to this question. Hopefully by the time you read this review there will be an answer somewhere out there. My main concern here is that the water in this (probably BPA containing) polycarbonate plastic container actually heats up the water I'll drink. Bisphenol A will contaminate your water at an increasing rate the more that it is heated, and this is a real concern for me. Even more concerning is that Zarafina just doesn't know (or, won't disclose) if there is BPA in it.
If BPA is not a concern for you, enjoy this tea maker as it makes wonderful tea. If you ARE concerned about heating up water in plastic, try using a stainless steel turkish tea pot, which is a tried and true great way to make tea.
DANGEROUS Design Flaw Causes Leaks Apr 21, 2010 This tea maker worked well for us, UNTIL it developed 6 symmetrical sliver/chips at the edges of the water chamber, one at each corner and one in the middle of each side. The pot began to leak when sliver 4 fell off. DANGEROUS DESIGN FLAW, the water leaks near the electric contacts. I wrote the company and await a response. Will update.
4/29/2010 Zarafina replied promptly to my email about the leak. They noted that the unit was out of warranty, but sent me a replacement unit. (I complained of a design flaw rather than a manufacturing defect!) I appreciate their prompt reply. The new unit does not appear different, so I will wait to see how it holds up.
